Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. A handshake is the customary form of greeting.

2. It is important to maintain eye contact when meeting and conversing.

3. Good topics of conversation are culture, literature, sports and family. One should avoid topics concerning politics. The matter of the official name of the country -- the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), international relations with Greece, ethnic relations with Albanians, should be distinguished as particularly contentious issues for debate and discussion.

4. It is fine to bring gifts for the host or hostess when invited for dinner at a home.

5. One should cover his or her mouth when laughing or yawning.

6. It is best not to smoke in public places.
