Cultural Etiquette

Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. If invited to dinner it is appropriate to give a small gift to the host or hostess as a token of appreciation.

2. Moldovan etiquette requires that host or hostess insist on food and drink to be offered to guests no matter how many times the guest refuses. This is not considered pushy but rather good hospitality.

3. A handshake is an appropriate greeting with men. Women may choose not to shake hands.

4. Smart but conservative dress is important for business meetings.

5. Shorts are considered to be in poor taste.

6. The sense of time is relaxed, business or social gatherings may not start on time. It is important for the foreign guest to be on time.

7. You may wish to avoid political discussions until close friendships have been made. Sports, culture, Moldovan wine and travel make excellent topics of conversation.
