Cultural Etiquette
Cultural Dos and Taboos
1. A handshake is the customary form of greeting. Relatives and close friends may greet each other with a kiss and embrace.
2. Direct eye contact is important during greetings and conversation.
3. Culture, sports, fashion, travel and international politics are fine topics for conversation. One should avoid discussing sex, religion and national politics until a solid friendship is established.
4. It is fine to bring a gift of appreciation if invited to dine at someone's home. Flowers are fine as long as they are not roses, as a rose connotes a romantic interest. Avoid giving an even number of flowers, as that is considered unlucky. Chocolate makes a fine gift.
5. The type of dress depends upon the occasion but in general a casual and stylish dress is fine.
