Cultural Dos and Taboos
1. Greetings should always include some interest in your acquaintances family and
health. Jumping into a discussion without these formalities may result in the silent treatment.
2. The left hand rules apply here. Do not take or give anything with the left hand. Do not eat with the left hand.
3. There is a significant Muslim population in Tanzania. Be aware of the different social customs between each ethnic and religious group. Always introduce yourself to the villages' chiefs, as they will help you understand the rules of etiquette for each particular village.
4. Dress should be conservative and modest.
5. Traditional dinners serve food from one common bowl. There may not be any utensils available. You will be expected to eat with your right hand, never letting the tips of your fingers touch your mouth. Water filled bowls will be passed around from time to time for people to wash their hands.
6. Always stay for conversation after the meal. "Dining and dashing" is not appropriate.
