Cultural Etiquette

Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. It is fine to discuss politics but use tact. The recent war has devastated many lives, so listen to individual views with out verbally passing judgment on them. It is best that the foreign visitor not be the one to initiate political subjects.

2. A handshake with direct eye contact is the appropriate form of greeting.

3. Use titles and surnames when addressing acquaintances during business or social situations.

4. There is a range of different cultures and religions throughout the country. Therefore try to observe the local traditions of each town or neighborhood you will find yourself. Be careful to observe the social conventions for the public consumption of alcohol, dress and public displays of affection.

5. Dress is comparable to that of Western Europe, taking care to dress appropriately for the climate. That said, modest dress is suggested for this country.
