Cultural Dos and Taboos
1. A firm handshake with direct eye contact is the customary greeting.
2. Dinning etiquette requires that both wrists be kept on the table.
3. It is very polite to eat everything on your plate.
4. To indicate "no" nod your head up and down. To indicate "yes" move your head horizontally back and forth.
5. If in Bulgaria for business, it is important that you are punctual for appointments.
6. Always address someone with their title and last name until invited to do otherwise.
7. Bulgarians will feel uncomfortable with backslaps and affectionate greetings until a close friendship is established. Avoid extroverted shows of interpersonal emotion until a deeper connection is established.
8. It is fine to bring a gift for the host or hostess when invited to dinner. Chocolate, wine or souvenirs from one's country make a fine gift.
