Cultural Etiquette
Cultural Dos and Taboos
1. A handshake accompanied by a nod of the head is the customary Estonian greeting.
2. It is considered unlucky to shake hands over the door.
3. Punctuality is very important for business meetings.
4. Direct eye contact should be maintained during conversation.
5. Address individuals with their title and last name unless invited to do otherwise.
6. If invited to an Estonian home, it is fine to bring a gift, such as chocolates, to the host or hostess.
7. Good topics of conversation include sports, family, culture, and international politics.
8. Dress is generally casual and should conform to the temperate climate. Business wear is more conservative; suits are the norm for both men and women. Eveningwear may be required for certain social functions and a well groomed appearance is advised.
