Cultural Etiquette

Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. Western etiquette is the rule of thumb in Namibia.

2. In general, the handshake is an acceptable form of greeting. One may see locals greet each other by placing the right hand on the other's left shoulder.

3. Always show the utmost respect to elders. Contradicting them or lack of giving them the right of way will be a poor reflection on you.

4. Only use the right hand when eating from a common bowl.

5. Discussing children are a favorite topic of conversation in Namibia. However, refrain from this topic with a childless woman, as this may be a source of shame for her.

6. For those who go the Namibia on business, do not rush in to business discussion right away. Namibians will want to spend time getting to know you in order to develop trust. Expect to converse on personal and family matters before, during and after negotiations.
