Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. Visitors are urged not to display or boast of their wealth. To do so may lead to being targeted for theft.

2. The political turmoil and war has devastated much of the country. Visitors may want to photograph people but should consider the feelings of the individuals first. Despite their misfortune, the people of Rwanda still have pride and may not want their situation to be on display. One should always ask permission before taking pictures of locals.

3. Do not take pictures of anything dealing with the military or government.

4. The left hand is taboo. One should restrict its is use. Never eat, drink, take or give anything with the left hand.

5. Casual, but modest dress, is acceptable.
