Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. Greetings include handshakes and a fair amount of time inquiring about health and
family. Negative responses are not appreciated.

2. Avoid discussing the Senegalese political situation.

3. The left hand should be restricted in its use. Never eat with your left hand. Never take or give objects with the left hand.

4. Respect the Muslim codes of behavior. Women should dress modestly. Never present a Muslim with a gift of alcohol.

5. Men and women may be asked to dine separately.

6. When eating fish it is customary to drop the bones to the floor, but you may want to watch your host's example before doing this.

7. Plan on staying for a few hours after dinner to spend time conversing with the host or hostess.
