Cultural Etiquette

Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. If invited to drink kava with the villagers, proper etiquette requires that the kava be swallowed in one gulp. On the island, Tanna, kava is for men only and local women must not go near the men during the drinking ceremony.

2. Do not haggle over products in the market. The prices are set and if one begins bargaining he or she will only offend the merchant.

3. Swimwear should only be worn at resorts or beaches. Casual wear is acceptable. In fact, ties are unacceptable. Modest dress is always best when outside the resort or hotel area.

4. Sundays are days of worship and outside the resorts few businesses will be open.

5. Always ask permission before photographing someone.
