Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. A handshake is the typical form of greeting and it will also be used when taking leave of a person or group.

2. Always shake hands when you meet someone new.

3. Respect must be given to the elders. Never make eye contact with those who are older than you. It is customary to kneel before an elder before speaking to them.

4. Safe topics of conversation include family, sports, Benin culture and your culture.

5. Always dress modestly, especially in villages.

6. Always ask permission before photographing people or religious statues, especially those of deities.
