Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. Greetings should always include some interest in your acquaintances family and health. However, never ask if a person is married, which may produce embarrassment as a man may have several wives.

2. The left hand rules apply here. Do not take or give anything with the left hand. Do not eat with the left hand.

3. Public displays of affection are frowned upon.

4. Women should not smoke or wear shorts in villages.

5. It is very rude to look an elder or respected person in the eye.

6. Thanks may be shown by hand clapping.

7. Haggling is expected in the market place, but not in stores.

8. Avoid discussing politics with people you do not know well.
