Cultural Etiquette
Cultural Dos and Taboos
1. Direct eye contact with a firm handshake is the acceptable form of greeting. A woman will often (but not always) extend her hand first if she wishes to shake hands.
2. The visitor should be sensitive to discussion concerning the political situations of the past and present. An outsider's opinion -- especially if it is not well-informed -- is not always welcomed. However, genuine interest in Montenegro's culture, history, and its status as the world's newest country will be well-received.
3. Other safe topics of conversation are sports, culture, travel, business and family.
4. Modest dress, akin to conservative Western style of clothing, is appropriate in this country.
