Cultural Etiquette

Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. Handshakes should be gentle.

2. In new social situations, visiting guests should wait for elders to introduce them to people.

3. Be sure to take and give gifts with both hands as this gesture shows the giver respect and appreciation.

4. As in most African counties the left restrictions apply. Only use the right hand to eat or take and give objects.

5. Women and men should dress modestly in villages. Men should always keep their chest covered. Women should keep knees, shoulders and underarms covered.

6. Never stand over prepared food (or food while it is being prepared) to smell it. This may offend the cook and the dish may not be served.

7. Always ask permission before taking a picture of anyone.
