Cultural Etiquette

Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. As there is a large Muslim population in Chad, be sure to observe and respect Islamic traditions and social conventions.

2. The left hand is taboo. Never give or take anything with the left hand. It is especially important that you do not use your left hand when eating from a common bowl.

3. Expect to remove your shoes when entering a home or mosque.

4. Never show the bottom of the foot to a Muslim.

5. Women may choose not to shake hands with men and visa-versa.

6. Always ask permission to photograph people.

7. Despite the sometimes-extreme heat, always dress modestly. Both men and women should never wear shorts.
