Cultural Etiquette

Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. Generally, people greet each other by bowing with their palms pressed together. The higher the palms are raised, the more respect is being shown.

2. Do not touch the heads of others, even a child. The head is considered the most pure part of the body, as the spirit is believed to reside there.

3. Remove you shoes before entering a private home or temple. Never expose the sole of you foot to anyone. Never point with your foot.

4. Dress modestly and conservatively, especially if traveling on business.

5. Avoid giving gifts wrapped in white wrapping paper. White is associated with death and is considered unlucky.

6. Always respect the elderly.

7. Public displays of affection are looked down upon.
