Attack on military armory in Sierra Leone leads to nationwide curfew

Sierra Leone witnessed armed clashes in its capital, Freetown, Nov. 26, 2023 The government declared an immediate nationwide curfew after what it described as an attack on a military armory. The situation escalated as witnesses reported gunfire, explosions, and prison escapes, heightening tensions in the region.

The clashes began in the Wilberforce district of Freetown, where the targeted armory and several embassies are located. Witnesses reported gunshots and explosions, painting a chaotic picture of the situation. Disturbing videos on social media suggested a significant number of prisoners had escaped from the central jail, adding to the complexity of the crisis.

The Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) swiftly issued a statement expressing "zero tolerance for unconstitutional change of government." The regional body voiced its "utter disgust" over a perceived plot to acquire arms and disrupt the peace and constitutional order in Sierra Leone.

Likewise, the United States embassy condemned the attempt to break into the armoury, expressing support for those working towards a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous Sierra Leone.

The motive behind the attack remained unclear, and the government did not immediately provide further details.  However, Sierra Leone has faced  a political crisis since the presidential and general elections in June 2023. President Bio was  re-elected to power but faced criticism from international observers regarding inconsistencies and a lack of transparency in the electoral process. The main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party disputed the results and boycotted all levels of government.  Ultimately, an agreement was reached between the APC and the government, mediated by the Commonwealth, the African Union, and Ecowas, to end the boycott in exchange for resolving politically motivated detentions and court cases.

As to the attack on the armory in November 2023? Sierra Leone's government assured the public that calm had been restored, stating that the attempt to breach the armory at a major army barracks had been repelled. Information Minister Chernor Bah emphasized that the security forces were in control but declared a nationwide curfew to facilitate the apprehension of suspects. President Julius Maada Bio reassured citizens that security forces were working to eliminate any remnants of the attackers.
