Darfur region of Sudan mired by dire humanitarian crisis

Africa: Sudan

Darfur region of Sudan mired by dire humanitarian crisis

In May of 2024, the Darfur region of Sudan was mired by a  dire humanitarian crisis, urgently requiring international intervention to prevent widespread starvation and death. As escalating violence ravaged the region, people were reportedly resorting to consuming "grass and peanut shells" just to survive.

More than a year earlier in April 2023, a civil war that erupted in Sudan, plunging the country into a brutal conflict between the ruling military junta and its former ally, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as they vied for control over the country.

The conflict has been marked by reports of sexual violence, genocidal acts, and civilian casualties, resulting in a mass exodus of refugees. Attacks on humanitarian aid workers by gunmen further exacerbated the crisis, hindering efforts to assess and address the needs of affected communities.

The encirclement of North Darfur's capital, El Fasher, by the RSF  led to increasing arbitrary killings, village burnings, and escalating air bombardments, leaving thousands displaced and vulnerable.

Despite intermittent food assistance deliveries, millions of people in Darfur were facing emergency levels of hunger, largely due to  ongoing fighting and bureaucratic obstacles. The surge in violence in the spring of 2024 disrupted aid convoys and humanitarian corridors, further impeding the delivery of essential relief supplies.

The staggering scale of displacement and humanitarian need in Sudan, with over 8.7 million people displaced and 24.8 million requiring assistance, underscored the gravity of the situation.
